On 27 July, seven eager students learned to bake muffins during the first evening baking class at Bach’s Bakery in Changsha. With the long-term goal of providing vocational training for hearing-impaired young adults, Bach’s Bakery opened its doors last year and began selling delicious German-style baked goods. This summer baking classes for the general public are being offered as well as a training program for a hearing-impaired intern. [more]
On 11 December, scholars from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Beijing Normal University joined the closing ceremony of the initial phase of the Zhuang Character Script Project in Nanning, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. To date, a font that includes 7,500 characters used by the Zhuang people to write their language has been created. Many of these will be submitted to the International Standards Organization for inclusion in Unicode.[more]
The students, teachers and parents of the Special Education Program sang, played and danced their way into the hearts of the audience during their annual holiday program in Tianjin. It was a celebration of love, hope, life and the progress the children and young adults had made during the year. [more]
The 8th Annual Special Education Conference was held 25-28 October 2010. People from over 30 local organizations and government-run orphanages gathered at the Training Centre of the Civil Affairs Bureau in Beijing to learn and share experiences.[more]
On 14 April 2010 a deadly earthquake struck southern Qinghai province causing tremendous loss of life and suffering among the people of Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. JHF associates in Qinghai, working together with other partners, are involved in ongoing efforts in the areas of relief supplies, post-traumatic stree counselling, medical rehabilitation equipment and a mobile rehabilitation clinic.

JHF’s new English Teacher Training Project completed its third TESOL course in July in Tianjin. Four hard-working trainees finished the course, which ran from 5-24 July, 2010. The next course, a 10-week part-time version, is set to begin 7 September.[more]

These are some of the questions that were asked just half-way through the first day of a three-day Physical Therapy and Special Education Training that took place this month in Taiyuan, Shanxi.
As a prelude to World Autism Awareness Day on 2 April, the Tianjin Special Education Program held a “Love Autistic Children Charity Party” with the help of a local international school. They followed this event with an eight day photo and video exhibition held at the Sheraton Hotel to help raise public awareness for children with autism.[more]
