"Jian Hua" means "build China" in Chinese and was founded in 1981 by a group of Chinese businessmen and academics in Hong Kong. JHF is dedicated to serving the people of China through sending professionals to serve in a wide variety of positions, ranging from language teachers to medical doctors, development workers to occupational therapists, linguists to orphanage workers and businessmen.
JHF is registered with the State Administration for Foreign Expert Affairs in Beijing as an approved overseas organization for recruiting professionals, and currently has 110 longer term expatriate associates from 15 nations serving together with local Chinese colleagues in several provinces across China.
JHF has a representative office in Tianjin that coordinates both personnel and projects in the area. The international headquarters of JHF are in the strategic city of Hong Kong, and voluntary representatives and Boards are active in several overseas countries. JHF is registered in Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and the United States, as well as in Hong Kong. In other countries there are officially designated individual representatives.
The chairman of JHF's International Board in Hong Kong is Mr William Wong (environmental protection professional); other members are: Professor Patrick Cheng (former Vice Chancellor of Hong Kong University); Professor Felix Chan (Faculty of Law at HKU); Ms Emma Ho (IT consultant); Professor Wing Yan Mok (China Graduate School of Theology); Dr Tong-Yow Ng (medical doctor) and Mr John Teng (investment advisor).
Meet some of the JHF family
JHF depends on donations from the general public, funding agencies and organizations, and associates contribute an annual administration fee of HK$4,775 (for a single) and HK$6,680 (for a couple) The currency rate is based on the exchange rate on the day when the fee is deducted. Major funding for relief projects has come from the Hong Kong government and from overseas aid agencies. Most JHF staff and representatives serve as non-salaried volunteers and receive financial support from friends and organisations.
